Creating a Local Cube from a Relational Database

CubeSlice 9 supports the creation of local cubes from a relational database. To do this, however, CubeSlice requires that you first create an Analysis Server cube from that relational database.

But what if you want to create a local cube without first creating an Analysis Server cube? You can do that in Microsoft Excel. Here's how to do it:

1. Start a new worksheet using Microsoft Excel, Version 2000 or later.

Would you like to improve the speed of your cube browsing? Would you like your users to view OLAP data offline? You can do this with CubeSlice. We can demo CubeSlice for you, using your own cubes or with our sample cubes. Sign up for a free demo now.

2. Select Get External Data from the Data menu.

3. In the Choose Data Source dialog select a relational database on the first tab. DO NOT use the OLAP Cubes tab.

4. Enter the appropriate connection information to connect to the database.

5. After connecting to the database, the Query Wizard should open. Create a query with the Query Wizard that includes all the columns from all the tables that you want included in a local cube. If you have a star schema in your relational database, you would choose the fields from the fact table and all the fields from the dimension tables that you want to include in your local cube.

6. On the last screen of the Query Wizard you will be given a choice of what you would like to do next. Select "Create an OLAP Cube from the query."

7. After you click finish in the Query Wizard, the OLAP Cube Wizard will open. This wizard allows you to pick measures, dimensions, and levels for your local cube.

8. On the last screen of the OLAP Cube Wizard, select the choice Save a cube file containing all data for the cube. Select a file name and directory for your local cube file.

9. After clicking Finish, you will be asked to save the query that is used to create the local cube. Give the query a name and save it. After you do so, the local cube file will be created.

10. You can now use the local cube file in CubeSlice. (or other OLAP client of your choice)

If you are just using the CubeSlice Viewer, double-click on the local cube file to open it. Or, if the CubeSlice Viewer is already open, select Open - Local Cube File from the File menu. You can now use the local cube to create a set of views.

If you are using the CubeSlice Creator, do the following:

1. Open the CubeSlice Creator.

2. Select Create a New View from the opening dialog.

3. Select Local Cube Connection for the Connection Type and browse to find the local cube file.

4. Select the name of the local cube in the local cube file and choose Add Cube.

5. You can now create views from the local cube file, and use it to create CubeSlice View and CubeSlice Data files.
