Using CubeSlice With and Without Analysis Services from Microsoft SQL Server 

CubeSlice is designed to work with Analysis Services from Microsoft SQL Server. Both the CubeSlice Creator and the CubeSlice Viewer can connect to cubes stored in a Microsoft Analysis Server. The CubeSlice Creator can create local cube files from Analysis Server cubes. 

But you can also use CubeSlice if you don’t have access to Microsoft SQL Server and Analysis Services. You can create a local cube file using Microsoft Excel and use that local cube file as the source data for your CubeSlice files. Here is a description of how to do that.
